The Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB) was established on 1 November 1973, with the approval of the Union Cabinet, as an independent recruitment agency.

The Government of India approved the restructuring of the Board in its Union Cabinet meeting held on 1 August 2018. The decision was conveyed through Notification No. 25/CM/2018(i) dated 6 August 2018 and was subsequently published in the Gazette of India on 9 August 2018.

Consequent upon this restructuring, ASRB was delinked from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and attached to the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. The restructured Board has its own cadre of administrative staff in the Secretariat and exercises independent administrative control over this cadre. In addition, a separate budget head has been created for ASRB under DARE.
